Breastfeeding Support is Beyond Valuable

The basics of breastfeeding support have remained the same over time. Support includes patient listening, understanding and acknowledgment of the physical and emotional transition a new baby brings to a mother and to a family. It also includes a solid understanding of the process of breastfeeding itself.

There are a variety of support group possibilities available in most locales. Groups meetings to support breastfeeding mothers are offered at many hospitals. Led by hospital lactation consultants, these groups typically provide support in the very early stages of the breastfeeding.

Check with your healthcare providers to assist you in finding a hospital sponsored groups.

Support from an experienced mother can help you reach your breastfeeding goals.

Mother to mother breastfeeding support groups continue to provide important information as well as encouragement to new mothers regarding the breastfeeding relationship. Mother to mother support groups are led by trained volunteers and can provide support and friendships that last well beyond the initial stages of breastfeeding.

In the late 1950's the concept of support groups was taking hold. It was during this same time period that a group of young mothers were chatting at a church picnic in a Chicago suburb. The discussion included breastfeeding and the frequency of questions asked of the breastfeeding mothers. It was there that the idea of a breastfeeding support group led by mothers was born.

Seven women, Mary Ann Cahill, Marian Tompson, Mary White, Edwina Froehlich, Viola Lennon, Betty Wagner, and Mary Ann Kerwin began what would become the premier breastfeeding information organization providing information and support to women who wanted to breastfeed their babies.

Through mother to mother support, untold numbers of women have been given the confidence to breastfeed their babies.
