The time following the birth of a new baby is both wonderful and challenging. The presence of a newborn intensifies the awareness of the miracle of birth, the joy of family and the demands on parents.
It is a time of change, growth and learning for everyone in the family.
A little extra care and encouragement for new parents during this time can be especially valuable. Mothers, especially, deserve to be cared for and nurtured as they embrace and discover a new season with a new little one. This phase of indulging yourself in extensive time with your infant is your baby moon. It is a time to recover from birth, get to know your newborn and enjoy a new beginning in your family.
Include a labor doula and a postpartum doula in your early parenting plans to provide support for yourself and your family.
Consider giving yourself and your family the gift of a planned and acknowledged baby moon. Plan to spend the early weeks and months with as much time together as a family as possible. Recruit extended family and friends in advance to prepare meals, do grocery shopping and run errands. Have the freezer stocked with prepared and easy to reheat meals. Interview and consult with a labor doula and postpartum doula. Consider hiring one to care for you and your family during this special time.
A thoroughly indulged in baby moon helps facilitate a healthy transition for parents. It allows increased time for bonding between mother and baby and improves breastfeeding success. It creates added time for parents to assist older siblings to adjust to a new role. It can be just plain delicious for everyone in the family.
