"The days are long, the years are short." - Anonymous

The above quote, from an unknown source, is one I've heard most commonly among mothers reflecting on family life and the raising of young ones.

In my estimation, the phrase is likely to have come from a mother in the midst of the many daily tasks of home and child care. While attending to some of the more mundane, she may have been at the same time taking note of the astonishing developments and growth of her children.

As I prepare for a week of forecasted cold in Chicagoland, I imagine that she coined the phrase in the midst of deep winter. Perhaps she was searching for a missing mitten or zipping a child's coat, as one or more of her sweet babes, grown into "I can do it myself" childhood, cheerfully trudges out into a backyard snowy adventure. Don't we all wonder at some point, whatever their ages, "When did they get so big?"

As we enter 2025, I continue to be available to new mothers for breastfeeding information and postpartum support. Over the last few years, we've developed an additional avenue of support in an ongoing and consistent support group via zoom. Focused primarily on the joys and challenges of breastfeeding with breastfeeding questions addressed first and foremost, discussions sometimes go beyond into other parenting concerns and topics.

While face to face, in person interaction, remains superior, the online meetings have filled a need and been a positive experience for those who participate. Friendships have formed. Difficulties and successes shared. The bonds created across the internet and reaching around the globe provide comradery of mother to mother support even online.
